This site is for everyone who is learning Japanese hiragana and katakana. I was a part-time Japanese language instructor at the Centre for Modern Languages, University of Birmingham (September 1998- March 2001). Please try the quizzes from time to time until you feel confident, especially before the exam! On the download page, sound files of basic words and numbers are available (try on the web!), as well as a colourful hiragana screensaver (it was originally made for Windows95, but I hope it works on other Windows' as well) which shows you the stroke order of hiragana in 8 minutes!
Many thanks to everyone who has tried the quizzes, and who sent me comments! Your suggestions have really improved this site since it started as a WELL Project case studies last year. I look forward to your feedback this academic year as well, anonymously by means of a simple form on quiz pages, or by e-mail at takamis@hhs.bham.ac.uk .
