March 12, 2011 --- No damage in laboratory, but ...
Thank you for many emails from our friends and colleagues abroad, hearing news on "Tohoku-Kango Huge Earthquake". We are all fine in Sapporo and there was no damage in laboratories in Hokkaido University. However, we have negligible information on the present situation in the areas of Tohoku and Kanto, where many friends are living. Only we can do now for the people there is pray.
December 31, 2010 --- Photos from Ms. Maria Vittoria
Photos from Ms. Maria Vittoria Dozzi, "MaVi", were received. There were no credits for these photos, but according to a gate and buildings in those photos the place must be Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a famous site-seeing place in Milan. She stayed for six months in 2010 and will stay again in 2011 to perform the study on doped titania photocatalysts.
December 29, 2010 --- Dr. Yan Xiaoli and her family have moved to Singapore
Dr. Yan Xiaoli and her family have moved to Singapore. Her husband, Dr. Gao Yonggui, and she got an associate professor position at School of Biological Science and a Senior Research Fellow at School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, respectively, in NTU (Nanyang Technology University). Received photos tell that their two daughters are very well. A paper by Dr. Yan on photocatalytic and photoinduced reaction of methylene blue has been cited for more than 50 times since published in 2007.
November 30, 2009 --- 53rd Birthday of Professor Ohtani
On the 53rd birthday of Professor Ohtani, the members joined a tea party in his room, gave him a gift (a head-cover of a golf club) and ate stick cakes. Photos from left: professor getting the gift in smile/forty stick cakes of four kinds/professor interpreting something with enthusiasm/having two cakes for each.
October 31, 2009 --- Photos of Anna's wedding arrived
Dr. Ewa Kowalska kindly sent us photos of civil wedding of Ms. Anna Zielinska, who visited us last summer, of Gransk University of Technology (Dr. Kowalska obtained her Ph.D. degree from this university). Congratulation!!!.
October 6, 2009 --- Attending international conference on photocatalysis
Professor Ohtani attended The 14th International Conference on TiO2 Photocatalysis: Fundamentals and Applications (TiO2-14) held in Conference Center Niagara Falls. This conference has been organized by Professors David Ollis, Pierre Pichat and Nick Serpone and the others. Photos are (from left side): Entrance of the conference hall/Dr. Maurino, Professors Minero and Selli at the banquet/survivors at the end of the conference (1024*768 pixel large-size photos (ca. 1.3 Mbyte) are also downloadable: taken by Professor Minero and Ohtani.
April 30, 2009 --- Spring has come
Today is the last day of April. While in the main island of Japan cherry-blossom time had gone, we will have the time soon in Sapporo. However, still there is snow, accumulated during winter in our campus (photo: in front of the building of Faculty of Engineering).
April 27, 2009 --- Attending internationational symposium on particles
An international symposium on particles "The Second Symposium on Advanced Particles/ISAP-2009" was held in Yokohama (Keio University Hiyoshi Campus) and Professor Ohtani and Dr. Ewa Kowalska attended this symposium to present their posters on particles. Professor Younan Xia in Washington University at St. Louis made a plenary lecture on his work including those by Mr. Ohnuma of our university, who is studying in Professor Xia's laboratory.
January 21, 2009 --- Forum of Catalysis Research Center held in Tokyo
An annual forum of Catalysis Research Center, Hokkaido University was held, for the first time, in Tokyo at Ohokayama Campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology together with an evaluation committee. Photos (taken by members of Technical Department of our Center) from left: Digital Multipurpose Hall for lectures; poster session for young researchers; banquet held in the Catering Restaurant.
January 19, 2009 --- Korea-Japan Workshop on Photocatalysis and Solar Conversion
"2009 Korea-Japan Workshop on Photocatalysis and Solar Conversion" has been held in Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH). This workshop was organized by Professors Wonyong Choi and Jae Sung Lee (POSTECH) and 12 researchers from Korea and Japan joined. Photos from left to right: Congress Hall of POSTECH International Center; Japanese participants visiting Pohang Accelerator Laboratory; Professor Wonyong Choi introducing his laboratory.
January 14, 2009 --- Mr. Prieto's paper has been accepted for publication
A paper entitled "Correlation between Photocatalytic Activities and Structural and Physical Properties of Titanium(IV) Oxide Powders" has been accepted for publication in Chemistry Letters (The Chemical Society of Japan). This is a first paper of a Ph. D. course graduate student, Mr. Orlando-Omar Prieto-Mahaney, as the first author. Congratulations! In this paper, he discusses the correlation of photocatalytic activity of 35 titania photocatalysts for 5 kinds of reactions with 6 physical and structural properties.
January 9, 2009 --- Mr. Ohnuma's paper has been accepted in JACS
A communication of work by Mr Akira Ohnuma, studying at Professor Younan Xia's laboratory in University of Wachington, has been accepted in J. Am. Chem. Soc. Congraturations! His stay will be extended for a half year to the end of this summar to perform further research work. Photo was taken in Professor Xia's laboratory. His T-shirt might be of Hokkaido University telling a song of the dormitory.
January 1, 2009 --- On the start of a new year 2009
Last year 2008 was a good year because of nice works of members and collaborators for our laboratory. Due to many business travels domestic and abroad, it was very sorry for the members of Professor Ohtani laboratory not to have sufficient time to discuss. Among 13 years since Professor Ohtani came to Hokkaido University in 1996, he traveled most frequently in year of 2008, including travels abroad, Sydney, Palermo, and Cairo. In 2009, we would like to perform "good works".
December 15, 2008 --- Visiting Mansoura University, Egypt
On an occasion of visiting Egypt and invitation by Professor Sahar Mostafa, who had stayed in Catalysis Research Center in 2000 as a JICA visiting researcher, Professor Ohtani visited Mansoura University and gave an invited lecture at Faculty of Science entitled "Design, Preparation and Characterization of Highly Active Photocatalysts". Photos from left: a poster announcing the lecture/a portion of Professor Sahar laboratory/bouquet flowers.
December 13, 2008 --- Business travel to Cairo, Egypt
To interview a candidate of Ph. D. course graduate student for Asian Graduate Schools of Chemistry and Materials Science (AGS supported by Global COE Program), which is a trans-Asian educational network consisting of Hokkaido University, Peking University, Seoul National University and National Taiwan University, Professors Ohtani and Kakuchi (Graduate School of Engineering) visited Cairo, Egypt. In this occasion, some strange things, which had been used but can not be seen in Japan, the States, or European countries, were observed. Difficulties in universities in this country were also found. Photos from the left: "Mirinda" with a pull-off tab/a "Koshari" rice and pasta meal of a half USD/an analog bath scale in a hotel.
